AMBER and other finds...

Had a good morning on the beach and walking in Dunwich Heath. Had some good finds.
A very luck piece of amber. Plan to set off for a late afternoon beach walk today too, while the sun is still out. Fingers crossed for some more interesting finds.

HEAD

Here are some detail photos of a recent sculpture in progress. Building up layers of earth pigments. Picks up the detail in the texture of the sea worm holes that pepper he piece of wood. I think it is a piece of old oak. Probably a fragment of ships timber. It is very dark, suggesting it has been on the sea bed under mud for a long time, until the recent storms on the East coast.

GUARDIAN ANGEL - INK FESTIVAL 2019

Here is a large winged figure, Guardian Angel. It has a wing span of over a meter. The two pieces of wood that create the figure were both found on the river Alde at low tide. Worn beautifully over a very long period of time. Many tides carving the forms.
I will be showing this piece along with others at the INK festival in April, at The Cut in Halesworth, Suffolk.

MOTHER & CHILD

This is a new small sculpture of a mother and child. It is a piece of black oak wood that was washed up on the high tide at Aldeburgh. After all he stormy weather we have been having I had a good morning collecting elements. Sadly there were a number of Dogfish washed up. Beautiful fish and a sorry sight to see. I did collect a number of interesting pieces of wood which are now slowly drying out, ready for consideration in new work.

Mother and Child. 12cm high. Exc. base.

KNIGHT WEBB GALLERY

I have 4 new sculptures showing with a gallery in Battersea, London, called Knight Webb. Great to be showing work in a vibrant, creative part of London.

The INK FESTIVAL 2019

I will be showing some new sculptures at the INK festival 2019 @ The Cut in Halesworth, Suffolk. 12th - 13th - 14th April. It is a really exciting programme of theatre and the arts.

GROUP

I am getting together a growing group of small figures. Four inches or smaller. All different types of wood. And one in bone. I have recently found some really interesting pieces of bone, washed up on high tides.
I will be expanding the grouping of small figures. They have a power that goes beyond their size, and they are becoming an intimate reflection of my exploration of the human form.

RIVER STUDIO

A very bright and sunny morning at my outdoor studio yesterday. Collected some interesting pieces of wood. I also collected a big bunch of seaweed. Thinking that I may incorporate some in plaster when building up a figure. I like the idea of using the material found at the river to help create the form. Will let it dry out first, and see where it leads me.

SEA WORN

This is a new small sculpture. Mother and child. Form becomes very interesting when it is peppered with holes. By chance the holes on the smaller figurer describe the features of the face. This is nature at work, and a happy accident. I will be working on more figures using this sort of starting point. Will be interesting and a challenge to translate into bronze at some point.

BRICK HEAD

Had a good walk yesterday. Coastal erosion is uncovering all sorts of material. Here is an old paving brick, perfectly worn into a sculptural head. The eyes are mortar left in the recesses. Thought it looked very like a Brancusi sculpture. Think I will mount it on a teak base.
