WOOD GATHERER

Working on a new stick gathering figure. A bramble root washed up at high tide with a fragment of old sea  breaker defence. Two very different types of wood coming together. Work in progress.

GREENWOOD BEECH TREE

Working hard on the new series of Suffolk landscape paintings. This one is in progress and is of a big tree in Greenwood which is local to where I live. It is a great time of year to be in the woodland with light falling through the canopy. This painting is 40x30cm oil on canvas.

DRAWINGS

I have been working on a number of A5 drawings since the lockdown period started. All mixed media. Using recent sculptures a starting point. Form and colour creating a dream like quality which I am exploring.

COLOURED ICARUS

I have now finished the Icarus sculpture. Coloured with earth pigments.

LOCKDOWN DRAWINGS

During the lockdown period I have been working hard in the studio. Both on sculpture but also drawing. Using he sculptures as a starting point for the drawings, which I am doing on old HMSO A5  note paper which I found in a skip a few years ago.
Mainly using ink, but also introducing colour through other drawing media. Icarus and Daedalus is a recurring theme.

ICARUS

During the lockdown period I am working on a number of figures directly in plaster. A new way of working for me but one which I am finding really exciting. This one showing details is Icarus. Perhaps we all did fly too close to the sun. Time for creative reflection during these uncertain times.

DRAWING OUTSIDE

Yesterday was spent outside in the sun drawing from recent sculptures. The ink was drying very quickly so had to get a new feel for it as opposed to drawing indoors. Always good to have the challenge of different conditions as new and unexpected results can happen.

LOCKDOWN

I have been working very hard in the studio during this period of lockdown. Making new works trying different ways of working. Using the wooden pieces as inspiration for creating plaster figures. This is a really interesting way of working and allows the hand of the artist to be to the fore. In time I hope to cast some bronzes of this series. I have often incorporated elements that I have found washed up on the beach. This relationship between plaster and other elements I find interesting.

QUILL

Working on a series of drawings of my sculptures using a home made quill from a pheasants feather.
It gives a really dynamic line. Much more expressive than a metal dip pen.

NEW DRAWINGS

I have recently been working on a number of pen and ink drawings of sculptures. I am using a box of note paper from HMSO the I found in a skip many years ago. It is very thin and has a good quality for this type of drawing which I like.
Using a dip pen in a bottle of ink is a rewarding way to work.
